Sun safety

The sun is a wonderful source of light, warmth and vitamin D, but it can also pose some serious health risks for young children. Exposure to too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can cause sunburn, skin damage, eye damage and even skin cancer later in life. That's why it's important to protect your child's skin and eyes from the sun, especially during the summer months when the UV index is high.

Here are some tips on how to keep your child safe from the sun:

- Avoid the sun during peak hours. The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to limit your child's outdoor activities during this time. If you have to go out, seek shade under a tree, umbrella or canopy.

- Use sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to your child's exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or more often if your child sweats or gets wet. Don't forget to cover the ears, nose, lips and tops of feet.

- Wear protective clothing. Dress your child in loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Look for fabrics that have a tight weave or are labelled with a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating. You can also use hats, sunglasses and rash guards to shield your child from the sun.

- Stay hydrated. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water or other fluids throughout the day to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol, which can make you lose more water.

- Check the UV index. The UV index is a measure of how strong the sun's rays are in your area. You can find it on weather websites or apps, or by calling a local hotline. The higher the UV index, the more you need to protect yourself and your child from the sun.

By following these simple steps, you can help your child enjoy the sun safely and reduce the risk of sun-related health problems in the future.
