At Banana Moon, we love celebrating the creativity and growth of our school leavers in a truly special way—through our annual ‘My First Poem’ project! Each child creates their very own poem, capturing their thoughts, feelings and imagination, and we bring them together in a beautifully published book. This cherished keepsake serves as a wonderful reminder of their early years and the incredible journey they have taken.
The Power of Poetry in Early Years
Writing poetry is a fantastic way for children to develop key skills that support their learning and personal development. Through poetry, children naturally engage in rhythm, rhyme and storytelling, all of which are essential elements of early literacy. This process not only builds their vocabulary but also strengthens their phonetic awareness, helping lay the foundation for future reading and writing success.
How ‘My First Poem’ Supports the Banana Moon Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed around five key domains: Me, Us, Challenge, Imagination and Communication—and writing poetry ties beautifully into each of these areas:
- Me – Writing a poem encourages children to express their thoughts, emotions and experiences in a personal and meaningful way. It fosters self-awareness and confidence in their own abilities.
- Us – Sharing poems with peers helps children understand different perspectives and strengthens their sense of belonging within the group. They learn to appreciate and celebrate each other’s creativity.
- Imagination – Poetry invites children to explore their creativity, use descriptive language and create vivid imagery, helping to nurture a love for storytelling and artistic expression.
- Communication – From discussing ideas to sharing their finished pieces, poetry supports verbal and written communication skills, building confidence in self-expression and language use.
A Lasting Memory
Our ‘My First Poem’ book is more than just a collection of words—it’s a celebration of each child’s unique journey. Families treasure this keepsake as a snapshot of their child’s early learning experience, and for our school leavers, it marks the exciting transition to the next stage of their education with pride and joy.
We can’t wait to see the wonderful poems our children create this year, and we hope this tradition continues to inspire a lifelong love for language, creativity and self-expression!
